It calls us to remember that we are not isolated beings but members of an interwoven community whose well-being is bound together. It reflects our collective commitment to the practice of cooperative economics, shared social wealth, and the communal work required to achieve it. Ujamaa calls us into economic solidarity and self-sufficiency to build and sustain systems that embody our shared values, nourish our communities, and ensure that the fruits of our collective labor benefit all. It is not merely an economic model, but a living expression of community interdependence and love-in-action.
Natural Extension of Dāna.
As a spiritual community grounded in Dharma, we see Ujamaa as a natural extension of Dāna, the Buddhist practice of generosity. Just as Dāna cultivates a mind free from greed and attachment, Ujamaa cultivates societies free from exploitation and isolation. Together, they remind us that liberation is both personal and collective, that to give freely is to affirm our shared humanity.
